Teaser Tuesday: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

I’ve turned down a few invitations from friends to see a newly released movie because I like to read the book first. So, for this Teaser Tuesday, I’m reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. That’s right. I’m one of the few people who hasn’t read the book or seen the movie so no spoilers please. Have you read the book, seen the movie, or both? What did you think?

Here’s a teaser:

People have been raving about this best-selling book so I’m reading The Fault in Our Stars by John Green before seeing the movie (release date is June 6th). Here’s a teaser:

“May I see you again?” he asked. There was an endearing nervousness in his voice.

I smiled. “Sure.”

“Tomorrow?” he asked.

“Patience, grasshopper,” I counseled. “You don’t want to seem overeager.

“Right, that’s why I said tomorrow,” he said. “I want to see you again tonight. But I’m willing to wait all night and much of tomorrow.” I rolled my eyes. “I’m serious,” he said.

“You don’t even know me,” I said. I grabbed the book from the center console. “How about I call you when I finish this?”

“But you don’t even have my phone number,” he said.

“I strongly suspect you wrote it in this book.”

He broke out into that goofy smile. “And you say we don’t know each other.”

Teaser Tuesday: Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott

bird by birdToday’s teaser comes from Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. I’ve seen many recommendations for this book, so I finally ordered it. To my delight, it arrived in the mail this morning. If you’re curious how this writing book received its odd title, here is the blurb about it from the back cover:

“Thirty years ago my older brother, who was ten years old at the time, was trying to get a report on birds written that he’d had three months to write. [It] was due the next day. We were out at our family cabin in Bolinas, and he was at the kitchen table close to tears, surrounded by binder paper and pencils and unopened books on birds, immobilized by the hugeness of the task ahead. Then my father sat down beside him, put his arm around my brother’s shoulder, and said, ‘Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.'”

I have a feeling this book will be every bit as good as I’ve heard it is. Here is an excerpt:

“Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve thought that there was something noble and mysterious about writing, about the people who could do it well, who could create a world as if they were little god and sorcerers. All my life I’ve felt that there was something magical about people who could get into other people’s minds and skin, who could take people like me out of ourselves and then take us back to ourselves.”
