Musical Monday: Secrets by OneRepublic

Yeah, I’m still elated over the OneRepublic concert my daughter and I attended a few weeks ago. The cello, one of my favorite musical instruments, is featured in many of their songs.  Brent Kutzle performed a cello solo during the concert and I could’ve listened to it all night.

The song Secrets begins with a sample of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1. These guys are incredibly talented. Enjoy.

“Secrets”
I need another story
Something to get off my chest
My life gets kinda boring
Need something that I can confess

‘Til all my sleeves are stained red
From all the truth that I’ve said
Come by it honestly I swear
Thought you saw me wink, no
I’ve been on the brink, so

Tell me what you want to hear
Something that will light those ears
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away

This time don’t need another perfect lie
Don’t care if critics ever jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away

My God, amazing how we got this far
It’s like we’re chasing all those stars
Who’s driving shiny big black cars
And everyday I see the news
All the problems that we could solve
And when a situation rises
Just write it into an album
Send it straight to gold
But I don’t really like my flow, no, so

Tell me what you want to hear
Something that will light those ears
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away

This time, don’t need another perfect lie
Don’t care if critics ever jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away

Oh, got no reason, got no shame
Got no family I can blame
Just don’t let me disappear
I’ma tell you everything

So tell me what you want to hear
Something that will light those ears
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away

This time, don’t need another perfect lie
Don’t care if critics ever jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away

So tell me what you want to hear
Something that will light those ears
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away

This time, don’t need another perfect lie
Don’t care if critics ever jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away
All my secrets away, all my secrets away

Musical Monday: Love Runs Out by OneRepublic

I recently took my nine-year-old daughter to see OneRepublic. When it appeared the concert was over she turned to me and said, “But they can’t be done! They haven’t played Love Runs Out!” I smiled and told her to be patient.

The band didn’t disappoint. A few minutes later the familiar beat of one of her favorite songs echoed throughout the amphitheater and she squealed with delight.

“Love Runs Out”

I’ll be your light, your match, your burning sun,
I’ll be the bright, in black that’s makin’ you run.
And we’ll feel alright, and we’ll feel alright,
‘Cause we’ll work it out, yeah we’ll work it out.I’ll be doin’ this, if you had a doubt,
‘Til the love runs out, ’til the love runs out.I’ll be your ghost, your game, your stadium.
I’ll be your fifty-thousand clapping like one.
And I feel alright, and I feel alright,
‘Cause I worked it out, yeah I worked it out.I’ll be doin’ this, if you had a doubt,
‘Til the love runs out, ’til the love runs out.

I got my mind made up, man, I can’t let go.
I’m killing every second ’til it saves my soul.
(Ooh) I’ll be running, (Ooh) I’ll be running,
‘Til the love runs out, ’til the love runs out.
And we’ll start a fire, and we’ll shut it down,
‘Til the love runs out, ’til the love runs out.

There’s a maniac out in front of me.
Got an angel on my shoulder, and Mephistopheles.
but mama raised me good, mama raised me right.
Mama said, “Do what you want, say prayers at night,”
And I’m saying them, ’cause I’m so devout.
‘Til the love runs out, ’til the love runs out, yeah.

Oh, we all want the same thing.
Oh, we all run for something.
run for God, for fate,
For love, for hate,
For gold, for rust,
For diamonds, for dust.

I’ll be your light, your match, your burning sun,
I’ll be the bright, in black that’s makin’ you run.

I’ll be your light, your match, your burning sun,
I’ll be the bright, in black that’s makin’ you run.
And we’ll feel alright, and we’ll feel alright,
‘Cause we’ll work it out, yes, we’ll work it out.
And we’ll start a fire, and we’ll shut it down,
‘Til the love runs out, ’til the love runs out.
‘Til the love runs out.

Musical Monday: Dog Days Are Over by Florence and the Machine

It’s been a fun-filled summer for me and my family, but it officially came to an end when my children returned to school today.  I didn’t write much, blogged infrequently, but I have no regrets. We squeezed every ounce of fun out of our time together by traveling to some amazing destinations in the great state of Texas, places like Surfside Beach, Enchanted Rock, Hamilton Pool, McKinney Falls, and the Blue Hole. And we heard this song, without fail, during each of those trips. In a way, it became our summer anthem. A warning that the dog days of summer were fading fast and we had better make the most of it.

According to Wikipedia, the dog days refer to the hottest period of the summer when dogs were driven mad by the incessant heat. Many believe this song is about a girl running from an abusive relationship. Regardless of the meaning of the song, it will now remind me of a wonderful summer spent with my family.

“Dog Days Are Over”

Happiness hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with her drink
And washed it away down the kitchen sink
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run
Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind
You can’t carry it with you if you want to survive
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
‘Cause here they comeAnd I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had and what was left after that too, oh
Happiness hit her like a bullet in the back
Struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
‘Cause here they come

Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind
You can’t carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
‘Cause here they come

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run

Musical Monday: All I Want Is You by U2

My son was watching the movie Contagion the other night. I’d seen it before, so I was busy doing something else in another room (writing, most likely). Then I heard this song (it played during the closing scene) and it’s been stuck in my head for days.

U2 released the song  All I Want Is You in 1988 on the album Rattle and Hum. Like most well written songs, it means different things to different people, so many interpretations of the song exist. Some believe it’s about obsessive love, the extreme desire to possess another person so completely that it really isn’t love at all.

Bono wrote the song for his wife, and according to this site the “poetic and symbolic lyrics describe his desire for true, unconditional love, and the promises his lover makes show the depth of her feelings.”

This is similar to my interpretation. To me, it’s about true love, not love wrapped up in promises of material things (“diamonds on a ring of gold”). It seems one person in the relationship is following society’s definition of love. If you love someone you must show them by giving them things. She is making promises to give him things (“treasure just to look upon it”). Yet, he is telling her that he doesn’t need them,  he doesn’t care about those things. She is the real treasure. All I Want Is You. To me it’s beautiful and describes the meaning of true love.

What does the song mean to you?

All I Wants Is You

You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want
Your story to remain untold

But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You say you’ll give me
A highway with no one on it
Treasure just to look upon it
All the riches in the night

You say you’ll give me
Eyes in a moon of blindness
A river in a time of dryness
A harbor in the tempest

But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You say you want
Your love to work out right
To last with me through the night

You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
Your story to remain untold
Your love not to grow cold

All the promises we break
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You… all I want is…
You… all I want is…
You… all I want is…
You…

Musical Monday: Are the Good Times Really Over by Merle Haggard

How often do you hear a song and a memory from your past springs to life? Music does that for us. The scenery and scents are reawakened when that familiar tune tugs at your heartstrings.  It’s a bit of nostalgia wrapped up in lyrics and a simple melody.

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination
and life to everything.” ~ Plato

Like his father, my husband loves old country music and I often tease him that he’s stuck in the past or born in the wrong era. Frankly, I love that he clings to these old songs, because they take him back to a time when his father was still alive and these memories are really all that he has left of him.

His father was a hard-working man who raised six children and died at the young age of 54, when my husband was just a teen. He had been diagnosed with cancer and outlived the doctor’s predictions of “six months to live” by several years, finally suffering a heart attack on Superbowl Sunday, surrounded by his family.

When my husband heard Merle Haggard would be performing at Whitewater Amphitheater in New Braunfels, Texas, he immediately bought tickets. This Musical Monday is to honor the memory of my husband’s father and the country music legend whose songs bring those memories to life.

“Are The Good Times Really Over”

I wish a buck was still silver
It was back when the country was strong
Back before Elvis
Before the Vietnam war came along

Before The Beatles and ‘Yesterday’
When a man could still work, still would
The best of the free life behind us now
And are the good times really over for good?

Are we rolling down hill
Like a snowball headed for Hell?
With no kind of chance
For the Flag or the Liberty Bell

Wish a Ford and a Chevy
Could still last ten years, like they should
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
Are the good times really over for good?

I wish Coke was still Cola
And a joint was a bad place to be
It was back before Nixon lied to us all on TV

Before microwave ovens
When a girl could still cook and still would
The best of the free life behind us now
Are the good times really over for good?

Are we rolling down hill
Like a snowball headed for Hell?
With no kind of chance
For the Flag or the Liberty Bell

Wish a Ford and a Chevy
Could still last ten years, like they should
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
Are the good times really over for good?

Stop rolling down hill
Like a snowball headed for Hell
Stand up for the Flag
And let’s all ring the Liberty Bell

Let’s make a Ford and a Chevy
Still last ten years like they should
The best of the free life is still yet to come
The good times ain’t over for good

Musical Monday: Happy by Pharrell “The Hat” Williams

My eight-year-old daughter loves this song. The other night she got scared and crawled into our bed. I guess she felt safe because she quickly fell asleep. I awoke hours later at 4 am to the lyrics of Happy and it wasn’t from the alarm. My daughter (who often talks in her sleep) was sleep-singing and it had to be one of the best ways to wake up. It instantly made me…happy.

For those who don’t know, the song is from the movie Despicable Me 2. It was nominated for an Oscar, but what I want to talk about is the person responsible for this infectious tune: Pharrell Williams, better known as the man with “the hat.” What can I say about Pharrell? He’s a singer-songwriter, record producer, rapper and fashion designer. Have you heard of him? Better yet, have you seen him? Most likely it was an image like this:

56th GRAMMY Awards - Red Carpet

No, just no. What is up with “the hat,” Pharrell?

It seems “the hat” has almost become more famous than him. He’s a good-looking guy and he actually does look good in a hat. Here’s proof:

pharrell flower baseball capThe “Floral” Baseball Cap

(yes, I’ll even take one with flowers on it over “the hat”)

So what’s the deal? Is he hiding something underneath all those hats? Does he have an oddly shaped head? No, not at all. Here he is “sans” hat:

pharrell-williams-paper-magazine-3The No Hat Scarf

pharrellwilliams1-2 bball cap scarfHe even looks good in a baseball cap and scarf.

See? He looks good in a hat. Just not that one!

Pharrell the hatYes, this guy is a fashion designer. He is a style icon and when you see images like the ones below you can understand why.

Pharrell tuxpharrell vestpharrell suitSo, what the hell, Pharrell? Why must you wear that hat? No matter what angle you look at it, it does not look good! It evokes images such as this one seen all over the media:

pharrell grey hatI still see this:

pharrell-williams-arbys-smokey-the-bear-2-400x242Can we just lose the hat? Better yet, let’s burn it. That’s one fire Smokey the Bear should not put out.

“Happy”

[Verse 1:]
It might seem crazy what I’m about to say
Sunshine she’s here, you can take a break
I’m a hot air balloon that could go to space
With the air, like I don’t care baby by the way[Hook:]
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do[Verse 2:]
Here come bad news talking this and that, yeah,
Well, give me all you got, and don’t hold back, yeah,
Well, I should probably warn you I’ll be just fine, yeah,
No offense to you, don’t waste your time
Here’s why[Hook]

Hey, come on

[Bridge:]
(happy)
Bring me down
Can’t nothing bring me down
My level’s too high
Bring me down
Can’t nothing bring me down
I said (let me tell you now)
Bring me down
Can’t nothing bring me down
My level’s too high
Bring me down
Can’t nothing bring me down
I said

[Hook 2x]

Hey, come on

(happy)
Bring me down… can’t nothing…
Bring me down… my level’s too high…
Bring me down… can’t nothing…
Bring me down, I said (let me tell you now)

[Hook 2x]

Come on

Musical Monday: The Story of My Life by One Direction

Yes, I have an eight-year-old girl in my house who listens to One Direction. When I think of some of the songs being performed today (vulgar lyrics and even more vulgar videos), I’m glad she has this boy band from England to follow. I have to admit, I like this song too.

“Story Of My Life”

Written in these walls are the stories that I can’t explain
I leave my heart open but it stays right here empty for days
She told me in the morning she don’t feel the same about us in her bones
Seems to me that when I die these words will be written on my stone

And I’ll be gone, gone tonight
The ground beneath my feet is open wide
The way that I been holding on too tight
With nothing in between

The story of my life
I take her home
I drive all night to keep her warm
And time… is frozen (the story of, the story of)
The story of my life
I give her hope
I spend her love
Until she’s broke
Inside
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)

Written on these walls are the colors that I can’t change
Leave my heart open but it stays right here in its cage
I know that in the morning now I see us in the light upon a hill
Although I am broken, my heart is untamed, still

And I’ll be gone, gone tonight
The fire beneath my feet is burning bright
The way that I been holding on so tight
With nothing in between

The story of my life
I take her home
I drive all night to keep her warm
And time… is frozen (the story of, the story of)
The story of my life
I give her hope
I spend her love
Until she’s broke
Inside
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)

And I been waiting for this time to come around
But baby running after you is like chasing the clouds

The story of my life
I take her home
I drive all night to keep her warm
And time is frozen
The story of my life
I give her hope (give her hope)
I spend her love
Until she’s broke (until she’s broke inside)
Inside
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)

The story of my life
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)
The story of my life
