Musical Monday: Dog Days Are Over by Florence and the Machine

It’s been a fun-filled summer for me and my family, but it officially came to an end when my children returned to school today.  I didn’t write much, blogged infrequently, but I have no regrets. We squeezed every ounce of fun out of our time together by traveling to some amazing destinations in the great state of Texas, places like Surfside Beach, Enchanted Rock, Hamilton Pool, McKinney Falls, and the Blue Hole. And we heard this song, without fail, during each of those trips. In a way, it became our summer anthem. A warning that the dog days of summer were fading fast and we had better make the most of it.

According to Wikipedia, the dog days refer to the hottest period of the summer when dogs were driven mad by the incessant heat. Many believe this song is about a girl running from an abusive relationship. Regardless of the meaning of the song, it will now remind me of a wonderful summer spent with my family.

“Dog Days Are Over”

Happiness hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with her drink
And washed it away down the kitchen sink
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run
Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind
You can’t carry it with you if you want to survive
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
‘Cause here they comeAnd I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had and what was left after that too, oh
Happiness hit her like a bullet in the back
Struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
‘Cause here they come

Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind
You can’t carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
‘Cause here they come

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run
