Musical Monday: Royals by Lorde

I recently read an article in Rolling Stone magazine about singer-songwriter, Lorde (born Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor). Here are some interesting things I learned about her:

  • She’s a native of New Zealand, the country I’ve wanted to visit most in the world (and that was long before LOTR was filmed there).
  • By the time she was twelve she had read over 1,000 books by authors such as Sylvia Plath and Kurt Vonnegut.
  • She wrote the lyrics to Royal in about half an hour when she was just 15 years old.
  • She took a non-traditional route to have her music released and succeeded. A New Zealand record label turned her down so she made some of her songs available as a free download on SoundCloud and they skyrocketed her to fame.
  • She doesn’t feel compelled to conform to society’s image of what a pop star should look or act like. In fact, she mocks that lifestyle in the song Royals.
  • She’s a nonconformist with a strong sense of who she is. At just two years old she was reprimanded by an adult for doing an art project wrong. She said, “I’m in my own world. I know what I’m doing.” Gotta love that.

But, the main reason this song has been on my mind is because I caught my daughter singing it recently (when she thought no one was listening) and her version of the chorus had me rolling: “Let me be your ruler. You can call me Green Bean.”   Hehe. I chuckle every time I hear it.

“Royals”

[Verse 1]
I’ve never seen a diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
And I’m not proud of my address,
In a torn-up town, no postcode envyBut every song’s like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin’ in the bathroom
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin’ the hotel room,
We don’t care, we’re driving Cadillacs in our dreams.
But everybody’s like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash.
We don’t care, we aren’t caught up in your love affair.

And we’ll never be royals (royals).
It don’t run in our blood,
That kind of luxe just ain’t for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz.
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.

[Verse 2]
My friends and I—we’ve cracked the code.
We count our dollars on the train to the party.
And everyone who knows us knows that we’re fine with this,
We didn’t come from money.

But every song’s like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin’ in the bathroom.
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin’ the hotel room,
We don’t care, we’re driving Cadillacs in our dreams.
But everybody’s like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don’t care, we aren’t caught up in your love affair

And we’ll never be royals (royals).
It don’t run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain’t for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz.
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.

Ooh ooh oh
We’re bigger than we ever dreamed,
And I’m in love with being queen.
Ooh ooh oh
Life is great without a care
We aren’t caught up in your love affair.

And we’ll never be royals (royals).
It don’t run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain’t for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.
