Quote of the Week: Stephen King

stephen king“When your story is ready for rewrite, cut it to the bone. Get rid of every ounce of excess fat. This is going to hurt; revising a story down to the bare essentials is always a little like murdering children, but it must be done.”
—Stephen King

I’ve been trimming the fat in my manuscript. I just hope I don’t nick an artery somewhere and watch helplessly as it bleeds out all over the floor.

        1. You’re right. It is an emotional roller coaster. I go from, “That’s not too bad,” to “Wow, I really suck.” It’s good to throw in some writing breaks just to keep going.

  1. Does anyone else find it odd that this quote comes from Steven King? I mean, if what he publishes is the “fat trimmed” version, his first drafts must be Brobdingnagian.

Don't be shy! I'd love to hear from you.
